How Does Distance Education Change the Landscape of Career and Technical Education - Conference Session Presentation

Session Elements

Background:

The North Central Accreditation (NCA CASI) Postsecondary Division of AdvancED was one of the cross-functional teams for which I did research, presentations and projects.   I began my involvement with a 20,000 foot conceptual presentation of distance education to help the director of that division set the stage to examine the current accreditation standards in relation to the rigorous standards that would be required to receive an expansion in scope from the U.S. Department of Education.  This was given to the NCA Postsecondary Recognition Council - NCA PRC (formerly the Committee on Postsecondary Education). During that year I also created the distance education survey items used in the Program Evaluation administered by the postsecondary team to assess the current use of distance education in the postsecondary (PS) institutions served by NCA.

The snap shot data in the survey was then used by the PS division to calculate the percentage of institutions that would benefit from the expansion.   Then the following year I was asked to follow up with an overview of research that illustrated how distance education and online learning was changing the landscape of career and technical field learning.  Once the expansion was approved by the NCA PRC, I was asked to coordinate my research with a postsecondary practitioner and present at the conference.  The goal was to initiate reflection and discussion with and among practitioners about how distance education and the integration of technology at their institution could better serve students already in and moving into the workforce.
